to the official site of the Pittsburgh Scholastic Fencing Conference, a high school fencing league in Western
Pennsylvania that operated for seven seasons and consisted of clubs from Allderdice, Bethel Park, North Hills and
Upper St. Clair High Schools. This site is intended to provide fencers, coaches and fans of the PSFC with a tribute
to the conference as well as results and statistics from its final season.
The PSFC was formed in 2002 when Allderdice, Bethel Park, North
Hills and Upper St. Clair decided to withdraw from the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Fencing Association and
form their own separate high school fencing league. (Allderdice left the PSFC following the 2007 season.)
It lasted until the end of the 2008 season, when it was determined that there were not enough teams to justify continued competition
and there was no legitimate chance for expansion.
The mission statement
of the Pittsburgh Scholastic Fencing Conference was to help the youth of the Pittsburgh area develop as student-athletes by
fostering the ideals of teamwork, school spirit and fair play through the promotion of interscholastic competition in the
sport of fencing.
Competition for
foil was conducted in two separate fencing conferences, one for boys and one for girls. (Epee competition
was conducted in one conference featuring co-ed teams.) All teams faced one another in head-to-head competition three
times during the regular season, and the team with the best record at the end of the season won the conference championship.
All matches were conducted on weekday evenings in the spring. They consisted of nine "round-robin" bouts between teams
of three fencers and one alternate. The first team to win five bouts won the match.
Thanks for taking a look at the site. Fans are welcome to get in touch with
their thoughts.
